Charles Antony — the camaraderie of International music!
To start with, I am envious about this man and I wish I could scribble down something bad about him, so So sO SO ENVIOUS. I mean, just look at him, he plays guitar along with harmonica, whistles musically, and then this personality of his as if some kind of a stylish cowboy with a hat and his trademark jacket and above all, he sings and yodeling too. The story does not end there, he sings not just in regional languages but also 16 foreign languages such as Cuban, African, Arabic, Italian, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Sinhalese and so many others. Guess what? There is more! He sings English classics and Hindi classics too. Just look at the class of people he entertains. Overall, a polyglottic performer who has performed with many legends including Maradona and Mohanlal.
Who would not wish to be blessed as much as him to live life with such entertainment. Isn’t it? Travelling around vivid locations, entertaining people with quality music and even getting financially rewarded for something that he loves to do. Everything falling in place, isn’t it? But too early to conclude so, there is a struggle which no one had ever thought about, there is a pain, there is a hard path which eventually carved out the musician what he is today.
Charles says that it was his brother who taught him to play the guitar. Will you believe, Charles had no interest in singing? But as days went ahead, participating in various competitions, Charles was keen in mastering the singing talent too. He started as a background singer during his college days and also progressed singing for hotels on a contract basis. Charles gained confidence with every performance and wanted to do something innovative and thus initiated the quest to learn songs of foreign languages which entertained the foreign tourists. Obviously, no foreigner would have expected an Indian singer to sing their native songs! But the perfection of Charles rendering their songs marks the standard of hospitality that the God’s own Country has in offer.
From passion to profession, Charles has marked his musical journey celebrating 25 years in the industry. Some of the memorable moments which Charles recollects, performing in India and abroad are :
Sang with Diego Maradona in Kerala and Calcutta
Sang Italian with Alessandro Del Piero(Italian football team captain) on his Birthday
Sang Arabic with the His Highness Prince Faisal of Saudi Arabia.
Sang Nepali with the former Prime Minister of Nepal.
Sang for Sachin Tendulkar and Glenn McGrath.
Sang Jamaican songs with West Indies cricket team.
Sang Aramaic with Bava Mor Aprem, Lord’s prayer ( the Song “Aboon Dabashmayo”) during his last visit to India.
Sang Cuban along with the daughter of Che Guevara, Dr. Alaida Che Guevara.
Sings with Mohanlal during his private get togethers.
Sang with Mr. Oyugi, Ambassador of Kenya in Austria .
It is indeed a honor for our country to know that the talent of Charles was noted and interviewed by BBC and Austrian Radio.
